Looking after your hair

If you're finding you have hair that keeps breaking, looks dull or just feels dry, then you're not alone. It's difficult to say how many people suffer from this, but it's estimated as high as 80% of people will experience some form of hair damage or breakage to their hair at some point in their life.

There are a number of reasons why your hair may suffer, it could be genetics, your lifestyle or environmental factors.  Also, another key factor for dull, dry, and breaking hair can also be a symptom of certain health conditions or nutrient deficiencies.

So how can you manage dry, dull or breaking hair?

Well, depending on how bad it is, you may need to seek professional healthcare advice.  However, for most of us, there are steps we can take to manage this ourselves. Here are a list of actions you may want to consider:

  1. Using a conditioner with harsh chemicals: Try looking for a conditioner that specifically looks to nourish your hair, however, doesn't contain harsh chemicals, as they can sometimes strip your hair of its natural oils.
  2. Limit heat styling: Yes, straightening irons, heated curlers and general blow drying can all damage hair and make it even more prone to breakage.  So try to limit this whenever you can.
  3. Deep condition: One a week, try a deep conditioning treatment at home.  Either buy a deep conditioner or make one at home using a few tablespoons of olive oil or coconut oil, with your regular conditioner.   This really can work wonders.
  4. Eat a healthy diet: Yes, your diet really does impact your hair!  Make sure you are eating a diet rich in vitamins and minerals that can help support healthy hair.
  5. Drink Water: Making sure you stay hydrated and drinking plenty of water can work wonders for your hair.
  6. Protect your hair from weather:  Unfortunately sun, wind, and cold weather can all damage hair and make it more prone to breakage. Try protecting you hair by using a hat, or UV leave-in hair.

Why is it so important to look after your hair?

Why not let your hair go. Cut if off.  Not bother and just tie it back. Well, for some of us that may work and be just the answer.  But for others, we may want a little more from our hair.  If you have dry, dull or hair that's breaking lots, it can cause you to feel less confident, leading to insecurities and reduced self-esteem. And can also cause social anxiety which can lead to avoidance of social situations.  Poor hair can also contribute to negative body image.

But aside from all the mental effects poor hair can lead to, it can also lead to a number of physical effects. Dry hair can lead to an itchy scalp, causing irritation and discomfort.  It can lead to split ends and thinning of the hair.  And styling the hair can be so much more difficult if the hair is not in great shape, which can be frustrating and difficult to manage.

Having great hair can really impact your overall well-being, which can lead to feelings of happiness and confidence.

When hair looks and feels healthy, it can boost self-esteem and improve body image. Basically, having great hair can have a really positive impact on you, and can contribute to feelings of happiness and confidence.
